USE CASE

Fill in the blank generator that accepts every right answer.

Type a sentence, put square brackets round the words you want to hide, and Quizoma's fill in the blank generator turns each one into a gap with its own list of accepted answers — then marks every paper automatically.

How a fill-in-the-blank question works

You write one sentence and mark the gaps. Each gap keeps its own list of accepted answers, so a sentence with three gaps is really three small checks with three sets of right answers. By default capitals and punctuation are ignored; switch the question to an exact match when they matter.

Scoring is all or nothing: every blank has to be right for the question to score. If you want part marks for a long sentence, split it into separate questions.

A worked example

A science question with two gaps:

Water boils at ____ degrees Celsius at sea level and freezes at ____.

Give the first gap the accepted answers 100 and one hundred, and the second 0 and zero. Here is how answers to the first gap are treated:

"100"→accepted ·"One Hundred"→accepted (capitals ignored)
"100."→accepted (punctuation ignored) ·"10"→not accepted

A second example: The ____ is the powerhouse of the cell. List both mitochondria and mitochondrion, and either form scores. A misspelling such as mitocondria does not, because each blank is matched against its list rather than by closeness.

Blanks or a written answer?

Use a blank when the missing word is settled and short: a term, a date, a number, a verb form. When spelling slips should not cost marks, or the answer is a phrase, use a written short answer instead — Quizoma can auto-grade short answers with typo tolerance, keyword coverage or numeric matching, where seven and 7 are the same answer.

Building and sharing it

Fill-in-the-blank questions are written in the editor of the online quiz maker or the Android app — file import covers single choice, multiple correct and true/false only. They can sit in the same quiz as any other format. By default a question can hold up to 20 blanks, each with up to 10 accepted answers.

Share the quiz with its 6-character quiz code or QR. Students type their answers into the gaps on any phone or laptop browser, and the paper is checked the moment it is submitted. On the results screen you can open any answer and change the mark if a student wrote something right that you had not listed.
